Production Schedule & Locations

Juliette of the Herbs was made over a period of seven years - from the first filming in 1991 to its release on video in 1998.

1990 Spring. Kythera Isle, Greece — Research trip to meet Juliette and to discuss with her the idea of making a film.

1991 Summer. New England, USA — First filming of Juliette when she visited America to speak at the 1st International Herb Symposium.

1992 Autumn. Kythera Isle, Greece — Three weeks filming with Juliette, Tish and a crew of two - cinematographer Brian Danitz and sound recordist William Rexer II.

1993 Summer. Greece, Switzerland, France, Spain and Portugal — Tish travelled and filmed for six weeks with Juliette, her Afghan hound and all Juliette's worldly possessions as Juliette moved from her cottage in Greece to a new home in the Azores. Cinematographer William Rexer II joined them to film in Switzerland and Spain. After finishing filming in the Azores, Tish hitched a ride home across the Atlantic on a sailing boat which was called "Juliet".

1994 Summer. Minnesota, USA — Filming with Juliette, Afghan hounds and vet Will Winter.

1995 Spring. England - Filming of English countryside.

1995 Summer/Fall. New England, USA — Filming of interviews with Rosemary Gladstar, Wendy Volhard and Susun Weed.

1996 - 1998. USA — Stock footage research and acquisition. Editing of film.

1998 Spring. USA — Film finished and released on Digital Betacam and VHS.

1999 Winter. USA — 16mm Release Print.

Technical Details

The film was shot on 16mm with an arriflex, an aaton, a frezzolini and a canon scoopic. Sound was recorded on 1/4'' tape on a nagra and on digital tape with a DAT recorder. The film was edited on a Steenbeck flatbed in Spencertown, NY.

Budget & Funding

The total budget of the film was $314,000. The initial funding came from individuals, both in the USA and the UK, who knew of Juliette and believed that it was important for her ideas to reach more people. As the years went by and herbs and holistic animal care became more popular, several herb and natural pet food companies made donations to the film, including PHD pet products, PetGuard, American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, Volhards Top Dog Training School, Sage Mountain Herbs, The American Herbalists Guild, Yerba Buena Botanicals, Clayton College of Natural Health and some companies who wish to remain anonymous.
